After 12 years as an enlisted Marine, Karl was commissioned as a Naval Intelligence Officer in 1985 and served at Joint Forces Command in Korea; on board the USS Nimitz in the Persian Gulf theater; and as an instructor in electronic warfare. During the brief months of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, Karl transitioned back to the Marine Corps, as a captain, and served four additional years - with 2d Marine Aircraft Wing, then a final assignment as 'dean of academics' at the Navy and Marine Corps Intelligence Center in Virginia Beach. Karl holds a BA in English (Texas A\u0026amp;M University); MS in Education (University of Southern California); MS in Entrepreneurship in Applied Technologies (University of South Florida - Dec. 2013); and Doctor of Education (Ball State University), and has been a student of Marine Corps folklore for 30 years. He has taught as an adjunct professor for more than a dozen colleges and universities since 1983, and has written extensively on radical Islamist propaganda for internal military audiences. Between retirement from the Marine Corps in 1995 and a recall to active duty in 2005, he served as a training manager at General Motors in Detroit (via Hughes Aircraft); as a training manager supporting astronaut training at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston (via Raytheon); and as a training manager at ENRON (through ENRON's collapse in 2001).
