After practicing medicine for a number of years, he earned a master's degree in health services administration (MSHA) and became a hospital administrator. Later he earned a master's degree in medical humanities (MMH) majoring in ethics at Drew University where he continued his studies for a doctorate (D. Lit.) majoring in ethics. Doctor Barham has long been interested in religon. He has traveled extensively in the middle east and participated in biblical archeological digs.
