She has practiced medicine in various countries. She has a Master's in Public Health and a Masters in Management from New York University ( NYU). Murthy has been the recipient of a numerous awards. She was recently awarded the National Council of Women USA Distinguished Leadership and Achievement Award in 2011 at the 100th Anniversary celebration of International Women's Day. Her first book Women's Global Health and Human Rights was published in 2009 by Jones and Bartlett and has been well received. Currently she is the Chair, Committee on Women's Rights of American Public Health Association and serves on the boards of several NGOs including The Eleanor Roosevelt Center at Val- Kill. Murthy is passionate about women's health issues and her research interests include violence against women and HIV\/ AIDS. Murthy was elected as fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine in January 2010. Currently she is on the faculty of New York Medical College. Murthy believes that the \"pen is mightier than the sword\" and loves to write, her collection of poems is an expression of her thoughts and the issues she believes in. She loves to travel and enjoys spending time with her family especially her mom and daughter.
