Washington, particularly the acrimony surrounding Hopkins's departure from the Colored American Magazine. She discusses Hopkins's pseudonymous writings in addition to those written under the known alias Sarah A. Allen. Wallinger interprets Hopkins's play \u003ci\u003ePeculiar Sam\u003c\/i\u003e, her now famous novels (\u003ci\u003eContending Forces\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eHagar's Daughter\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eWinona\u003c\/i\u003e, and \u003ci\u003eOf One Blood\u003c\/i\u003e), and the short stories, which have so far received little critical attention. This study also contains the little-known but important text \u003ci\u003eA Primer of Facts\u003c\/i\u003e.
