States in the\u003cbr\u003eregion all experienced some form of subordination to northern 'great powers'. Since 2004, she has co-organised with Mark Philp the 'Re-imagining Democracy' project, which explores changing ideas and practices associated with democracy in Europe and both Americas between the mid-eighteenth and the\u003cbr\u003emid-nineteenth centuries.
