He went to school in Rice Lake, Wisconsin and graduated from The University of Wisconsin at Green Bay in 1976. He worked in the banking and finance industries for several years before retiring in 2008 and started writing books. Fred now lives in Osceola Wisconsin with his wife. He volunteers time at Wisconsin Interstate Park where he enjoys sharing his experiences with visitors who are exploring the Ice Age Trail and exploring the protected Saint Croix River Valley. He has hiked Isle Royal, the Ice Age Trail, the North Shore of Lake Superior and several portages connecting them.
