My Ultimate Frenemy: The story of my love-hate relationship with wheatgrass
Juicing has been around for a long time, probably longer than most would guess. But before we get down to it:
What is Juicing?-Juicing is the act of extracting liquid from vegetables or fruit. This can be done by pressing the fruit or vegetables or by creating an opening in order for the juice to run out.
There are several different ways to juice, from simply squeezing fruit with your hand to the more elaborate and wide-scale forms of juicing by using heavy-duty industrial equipment. In general, Juicing is a way of consuming large amounts of fruits and veggies, and most households do this by using a Juicer, which could be as simple as mashing fruit on top of a cone or as high tech as using a variable-speed, driven apparatus (Juicer). Whichever method that you decide to use, in most cases the end effect will be the same, and that is to drink the juice that you just extracted, some say to drink it within minutes while others say you can save it up to a day. I prefer to drink it straight away so that I get the most out of it. After all, juicing is different from buying juice at your local grocery store because it focuses on being freshly squeezed/pressed vs the pasteurized process kind, which is not free from chemicals or additives, like high-fructose corn syrup. So…..how long has juicing actually been around? Well, according to the Dead Sea Scrolls it started somewhere around 100 BC, this also appears to be the 1st actual recording of juice extraction. (Kind of makes you wonder thou if the caveman ever chewed on herbs or plants for the juices? just a thought) Since then there have been countless, herbalists, and doctors of the times that have grated, mashed, stomped, or pressed fruit and veggies for one reason or another, mainly for medicinal purposes. In the early 1900s, a gentleman by the name of Dr. Max Gerson was the first to introduce the idea that diet (juicing) could be used as cancer therapy, along with many other diseases.

However, it wasn’t until the 1930s, when author and raw food advocate Dr. Norman Walker wrote a book called Raw Vegetable Juice and as a result, soon afterward invented the Norwalk Hydraulic Press Juicer, or as most people call it, the Norwalk juicer, that juicing became a thing. By the way, The Norwalk juicer is still a popular juicer today, and Walker lived to be 99 years of age, mind you the life expectancy in the 1930s for men was 58! Could this be an indicator that juicing is the Elixir of life?!

Today, people enjoy a lot of options when it comes to juices and juicing. Some go to their local health bar or gym to get their juice fix, personally, I would recommend buying your own juicer and making your own freshly-squeezed juices at home. Let’s not forget that juicing should not be a full replacement for consuming your fruit and veggies. Remember that juicing extracts the juice from fruits or vegetables, and it is true that the liquid contains most of the vitamins, minerals, and plant chemicals (phytonutrients) which is quite essential and beneficial, however, whole fruits and vegetables also have healthy, life-essential fiber, which is lost during most juicing processes. Here are a few other things to remember when juicing:
The Antioxidant Miracle: Your Complete Plan for Total Health and Healing
When making a juice, careful selection of the ingredients is important! Mixing vegetables with the fruit is a good start, and embracing variety will ensure there are plenty of different types of nutrients in the juice, vs getting too much of one and not enough of another.

You want more veggies in the juice mix vs fruit, so get creative and try juicing broccoli stems, turnips, radishes, bok choy, and other types of vegetables that are typically left out of juices. The reason being is that veggies have fewer calories/sugars. (4 to 1 is a good ratio-for example juice a carrot, a chunk of cucumber, a small beet, some ginger, and a small apple.)
Juices are full of vitamins A, C, and E, which act as antioxidants—These antioxidants actually help counteract problematic molecules in our bodies known as free radicals that can do some serious cell damage.

Juicing helps hydrate the body. Let’s face it, most of us don’t drink enough hydrating drinks as it is, so every little bit helps (No……coffee, tea, sodas, and alcohol do not hydrate you, Nice Try). This next one will have some of you doing a double-take…Leave the peel on when possible! A lot of the vitamins/nutrients are stored in the peel/skin of the fruit/veggie. I personally leave the peel on when I buy it organically, but if it’s not organic I almost always peel it, you have less of a chance of ingesting those nasty pesticides.

AGAIN! When possible (Organic) leave the skin on for apples, pears, bananas (yes, Bananas), beets, cucumber, peppers, eggplant, grapes, kiwis, watermelon, ginger, carrots, peaches, nectarines, and plums. (Of course, thoroughly was them first)
REMOVE The Peel/skin from the following, Lemons and limes, a little skin is ok but too much can upset your tummy, cantaloupe (This one’s skin is on the top of the list for sources of food-borne illness), oranges, and grapefruit (Extremely bitter), mangos (Been known to causes adverse reactions in people); and pumpkin (the shell is just too hard to juice)

By juicing, if you should decide to juice your fruits or veggies, you would make it easier for your body to absorb their vitamins and nutrients into the bloodstream. The thing to remember is that when your stomach is full, it drastically slows down the digestion and absorption process, that is why you should wait at least 30 mins, after drinking juice, before eating a meal, or wait at least 2 hours after you eat before you juice.

Another thing to remember is that it should not be gulped, slammed, or chugged down, like your trying to win the summer Olympics for beer chugging. It is meant to be sipped like a $500 bottle of red wine, enjoying the flavor of your juice as rolls over your tongue, swishing it around, before you finally swallow it. (It actually helps with the digestion process)
A quick Recap:
*Juicing involves extracting and drinking the juice from fresh fruits and veggies. Some people do this to detox, lose weight, while others do it to supplement their diet.
*If you are struggling and having a hard time eating enough fruits and veggies on a daily basis, then juicing is a convenient way to get a wide range of important nutrients that you might otherwise be missing out on
*There are studies that link fruit and veggie juice to a reduced risk of diseases like cancer, Alzheimer’s, and heart disease.
*Juices that are mainly based on fruit are much higher in sugar than vegetable-based ones. So remember to mix them and the 4:1 ratio
Bottom Line–Fresh juices contain important vitamins and antioxidants that can benefit your health. However, fruits and vegetables are still the healthiest and most nutritious when consumed whole.
