About the Author

Dr. Stuart Chen-Hayes is Program Coordinator and Associate Professor of Counselor Education/School Counseling in the Counseling, Leadership, Literacy, and Special Education Department at Lehman College of the City University of New York. Stuart was born and raised in Park Forest, IL and graduated from Kent State University with a Ph.D. in Counselor Education. He is a National Certified Counselor and a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and has been on the Lehman/CUNY Counselor Education/School Counseling faculty since 1998. He taught as a Counselor Educator for five years at National-Louis University in Chicago. Since 1999, Stuart has coordinated Lehman′s Counselor Education/School Counseling program partnership as a companion institution with the Education Trust′s National Center for Transforming School Counseling (NCTSC).

Dr. Melissa Ockerman is an assistant professor in DePaul′s College of Education. She was recently named Counselor Educator of the Year by the Illinois School Counselor Association (ISCA). Melissa was instrumental in making DePaul′s graduate school counseling program the first institution in Illinois and the 24th in the nation to affiliate with NCTSC initiative. The distinction recognizes DePaul′s school counseling program as a national leader in the school counseling profession. NCTSC promotes a new vision of school counseling in which school counselors advocate for educational equity, access to rigorous college and career-readiness curricula, and academic success for all students. It aims to transform school counselors into powerful agents of change to help close the gaps in opportunity and achievement for economically disadvantaged students and students of color. Melissa has a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University.Dr. Erin Mason is a former school counselor-turned-counselor educator. She worked in public middle school settings as a school counselor in Georgia for thirteen years. As a professor, scholar, leader and advocate, her goals are to positively impact the school counseling profession, including current school counselors, pre-service school counselors, and the students they serve. Erin′s primary research and presentation topics are professional identity development, leadership, advocacy and technology in school counseling. Erin has a Ph.D. from The University of Georgia.
