Peter Mancall is Professor of History at the University of Southern California. His book, Deadly Medicine: Indians andAlcohol in Early America was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in History. Frederick Hoxie is Professor of History at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
