About the Author
Adella Brunk Kanagy was born in 1922 in Biglerville, Pennsylvania. In 1934 she moved with her family to Goshen, Indiana, where her father Joe managed a shirt factory at Goshen College. Three years later, Joe and the family embarked on a year-long trip to California and back. Fourteen-year-old Adella kept a daily diary of their adventures. After returning to Indiana, Adella earned a B.A. from Goshen College and an R.N. degree from La Junta Mennonite School of Nursing. From 1951-1973, she and her husband, Lee H. Kanagy, served as missionaries to Hokkaido, Japan under the Mennonite Board of Missions. Later in life, Adella worked as a hospice chaplain. Adella is the author of The Dutch Kettle Cookbook (1977) and Letters Across the Pacific (2009). Now age 95, Adella lives in Pennsylvania and enjoys keeping in touch with family and friends. Her five children, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren live on three continents. Apparently, they also inherited the travel bug. Ruth Kanagy was born in Tokyo and grew up on both sides of the Pacific. She taught Japanese and linguistics for many years and now leads bicycle tours to introduce people to Japan (Japancycletours.com). She is the author of Living Abroad: Japan (2017, 4th edition) and lives in Oregon. Her two daughters and two grandsons live on the East coast. She plans to replicate her mother's Great Trip West in 2017, the 80th anniversary of the original journey.
