CURA: A Literary Magazine of Art and Action is a multi-media initiative based at Fordham University committed to integrating the arts and social justice. Featuring creative writing, visual art, new media and video in response to current news, we seek to enable an artistic process that is rigorously engaged with the world at the present moment. Volume 1, Numbers 3, 4 and 5 features work by Brenda Hillman, Arielle Greenberg, Patricia Smith, Craig Santos Perez, Alicia Ostriker, F. About the Author
The word "cura" is taken from the Ignatian educational principle of "cura personalis," care for the whole person. On its own, the word "cura" is defined as guardianship, solicitude, and significantly, written work. Each year, CURA features a theme in dialogue with a non-profit organization that reflects the vision of "care for the whole person." Our aim is to provide support for and to raise awareness of the critical work these organizations are undertaking. In 2011 - 2012, our partnership was with Covenant House, a childcare agency providing food, shelter, immediate crisis care, and essential services to homeless and runaway children. We seek to foster a movement of creative response guided by concrete and meaningful action-- to celebrate informed and active citizenship where a republic of writers, filmmakers, visual and digital artists converge. What Martín Espada has written about the social responsibility of the "Republic of Poetry" we believe applies to a Republic of all the Arts. It is "a place where creativity meets community, where the imagination serves humanity. [It] is a republic of justice because the practice of justice is the highest form of human expression."
