The old saying goes, "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." Like catching fish from oceans and lakes, catching the author's meaning from the pages of Scripture is something we can learn. Once we learn, we can find nourishment for the rest of our lives How can we increase our understanding of the Bible and decrease our human bias? How can we apply what we learn to daily life? In only 122 pages, the author explains ten tools and gives examples of how to use them. Using these tools helps us better understand not only the Bible, but other books too. The author even includes examples of how the tools can help us understand the people around us. The principles, traditionally taught in courses on "grammatical-historical hermeneutics," are not new. However, the author presents them in a fresh and simple way, demonstrating that they are rooted in common sense. This makes the book accessible to both believers and unbelievers. The author has spent 23 years as a missionary church planter, teacher, and coach in Montreal. This book is the culmination of his work to equip ordinary people to grasp the Scriptures for themselves. Comments from reviewers (from back of book): From Robertson McQuilkin, president emeritus of Columbia International University and author of Understanding and Applying the Bible: Fish the Bible is unique. It takes a complex subject-understanding and applying the Bible-and makes it user-friendly. Fun even But at the same time it is thoroughly trustworthy scholarship. Another unique feature: it will be of benefit to the seasoned Bible student and the new believer alike, and-surprise-to the unbeliever as well. From Grant Osborne, professor of New Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and author of The Hermeneutical Spiral: We desperately need good Bible study material that both encourages and enables church Bible study groups and the average Christians to engage in serious Bible study. Stephen Wheeler's Fish the Bible does just that. My prayer is that thousands of Christians will, through this book, begin a deep exploration of the wonderful, life-changing truths of Scripture.

About the Author Stephen earned his doctorate in chemistry from the University of Minnesota and taught chemistry at Wheaton College and Bethel University for a total of eight years. In 1987, he entered Trinity Evangelical Divinity School for theological studies. He and his wife were commissioned as missionaries with the Evangelical Free Church of America and moved to the Montreal area to work in church planting and leadership development. Stephen continued his training by correspondence with Columbia International University. He was impressed by the creative teaching method of his hermeneutics professor, who used recorded conversations with his wife to teach the subject. This sparked a dream to release hermeneutics from the confines of seminaries and Bible colleges and to bring it to ordinary people, including unbelievers. In 2009, he began teaching a course called "FISH!" In 2011, he began leading "Fishing Expeditions." With this book, he brings that teaching to a larger audience.
