Excerpt from Genealogical and Family History of the State of Vermont: A Record of the Achievements of Her People in the Making of a Commonwealth and the Founding of a Nation In Dorset, on July 26, 1776, assembled that convention which is said to have been the first body in the territory of Vermont to assume general legislative functions in the development of civil government. The scene then changes again to the court-house in Westminster, where, on January 15, 1777, without a dissenting voice, it was decreed that the district of land commonly called and known by the name of New Hampshire Grants be a new and separate State. Here, too, two days later, the convention, speaking for the people of Vermont, declared their inde pendence of Great Britain and of all other governments claiming jurisdiction, and appointed a committee of war.
