The scientific study of aging is a relatively nascent field of inquiry. Although philosophic and literary reflections on what it means to grow older appear in the earliest historical records, the systematic study of aging began in earnest about a century ago. Scholarly interest in the topic

Kenneth F. Ferraro is Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Director of the Center on Aging and the Life Course at Purdue University. Professor Ferraro is the author of more than 120 peer-reviewed journal articles focusing on health and aging. He is a fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and a former editor of the Journal of Gerontology: Social Sciences.
