History of Greene County, Vol. 1, 1651-1800

This history of Greene County, New York, (named for General Nathaniel Greene of Revolutionary War fame) touches on the earliest events of importance in the settlement of each town in the county. "To this early history has been added the most important events of 1925-26-27, together with a limited directory of each town as decided upon by the committee." A detailed history of each town includes its origins, early settlers and notable citizens, natural features, settlements, villages, patents, and a section devoted to pioneers and their homes. Greene County towns include: Ashland, Athens, Cairo, Catskill, Coxsackie, Durham, Greenville, Halcott, Hunter, Jewett, Lexington, New Baltimore, Prattsville, and Windham. A chronology of significant events, arranged by town, follows the historical sketches. A directory lists Greene County officials (1926-27), followed by lists of officials of societies and associations. Similar information is then listed by town, including the population from the 1920 census and 1925 census. A list of school instructors (by town) and a brief index to towns, pioneers, obituaries, chronology, and directories completes this work.
