About the Author
Biographical Notes Born in 1949, Brian burgess went to Grammar School from 1960 to 1963, when he left his home in Chester-le-Street, Co Durham, and finished his secondary school education in a comprehensive school, with 4 'o' level certificates. Apprenticed to Morganite Carbon Limited, he learnt a fitters' trade, and gained various National Certificates in Mechanical Engineering. In 1969 he enrolled at Middlesex Polytechnic to complete a thin sandwich degree course in Mechanical Engineering. During the two industrial breaks he worked in Germany, and predominantly Switzerland, acquiring a fluent knowledge of German, to complement his French knowledge. He achieved Institute of Linguists Grade I in both languages at a board in Westminster in 1972. Joining Cranfield Institute of Technology (now Cranfield University) he studied Applicable Mathematics, and was awarded a College Diploma (BSc hons equivalent from London University). He subsequently achieved an M.Sc. in automobile engineering by research, and developed a self configuring simulation system that predicted passenger cab deformation in vehicles under impact, The output results were verified by several major car manufacturers in the UK. He then went on to work in process research and project management for several years before joining the EITB Fellowship in Manufacturing Management at Cranfield Institute on the first intake, and was presented the medal by the Rt Hon James Callaghan MP, who was Prime Minister at that time. From 1979 to date he has worked in Manufacturing Industries alternatively in line management roles, and manufacturing consulting roles. He has worked for major blue chip organisations as well as a number of SME companies, and his passion for manufacturing is reflected in the good relationships he has developed and maintained with his clients and colleagues. With his wife he has bred, shown, trained and competed with his beloved Rhodesian Ridgeback dogs since 1976, his wife showing a progeny at Crufts, getting first in class. He has a passion for music, and plays guitar "fairly well", keyboard and saxophone "not very well". In 2003 he was granted Swiss nationality, and is now a dual citizen of Switzerland and the UK. Having travelled and worked globally, he has settled into a less hectic life in a small village in North Yorkshire, continuing consulting on a freelance basis. His corporate web site is to be found at http: //www.tpmplus.co.uk/ and it has a basic knowledge platform for TPM
