Since, majority of the fungal infections do not infect healthy individuals, their clinical
importance tend to be underappreciated. As for the general public, apart from
dermatophytic infections of the skin and nails, awareness about fungal infections
remains limited. However, with rise in the number of immunocompromised
individuals and use of modern medical devices, invasive fungal infections have
reached staggering numbers. Despite the fact that only a fraction of fungal species are
pathogenic to humans, they are responsible for significant degree of morbidity and
mortality (Pfaller and Diekema 2004; Srinivasan et al. 2014). Most fungal infections
are predominantly caused by Candida, Cryptococcus and Aspergillus species.
