MY COUSIN MAX by Julia Regul Singh
Max's home-world wasn't as far as I feared.
The Truth instead was much more weird...

MY COUSIN MAX is an illustrated children's story in rhyme with a multi-cultural theme. It is written from the perspective of a curious little boy who for the first time in his young life meets his 'alien' cousin Max. Although elders tell them that they are like brothers, the narrator's imagination is running wild. He can't help but ponder about Max (Actually, we have never met, not even on the internet!) who grew up on the other side of the world. Torn between the excitement of finally meeting the much talked about Cousin Max and the worry of possibly not liking him, the boy faces his demons of the unknown and starts a journey of embracing the new.

MY COUSIN MAX is a story that nudges the reader to embrace different cultures. It is inspired by my children's experiences as they were born in the US, raised by a German mother, and growing up in India amongst their extended family.
The first part of the story is about Max's anticipated arrival and the cousins' first encounter. The long waiting time at the airport makes the boy anxious about meeting his cousin from abroad who he is related to but knows little about. Gossip from relatives and the boy's wild imagination frighten him about what to expect from the boy who will soon be part of his daily life. In the second half of the story, the boy realizes that his family from abroad is actually very different from him and his life with his parents and relatives. Nevertheless, the two boys excitedly discover things they have in common, but also learn to embrace their differences rather than be frightened by them.

MY COUSIN MAX is for everybody who is interested in different cultures. It is for children and adults alike who have family members and friends spread out around this world. It teaches children that is it ok to be different and that those differences create opportunities for us to grow and learn from. It promotes cross-cultural understanding and an open mindset towards today's multi-cultural world.
