About the Author
John Thomas is a member of the faculty at the University of Virginia where he serves as Director of the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service. He began his professional career as a public school teacher and administrator. Following those years he continued his public sector role as director of several non-profit organizations of public officials both elected and appointed. At the national level he led an organization of county officials and a professional society for public administration. Throughout his career he has kept one foot in the academy while solidly planting the other in the practice of policy and management. John earned his doctorate at the University of Southern California and is an elected Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration. The Athenian Oath inspires his public work. John blends his professional responsibilities with an active religious and spiritual life. He is a life-long Presbyterian who remains actively engaged in his church. The Apostles Creed is the living foundation for his church life. He recently completed a three-year term on the Session where he served as the Stated Clerk. He is equally devoted to the care of his soul and finds meditation to be an essential technique in that aspect of his journey. John has embraced love, loss, and life. His reflection and the journey continue. He finds interaction with others who are similarly committed to exploration to be healthy and healing.
