Renal Diet For Cats: A Guide to Renal Diet and Care

For many years, the most frequently advised course of treatment for feline chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been dietary management. Renal diets for cats with spontaneous CKD have been proven to be beneficial in improving blood urea nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations, decreasing uremic crisis, and increasing survival in clinical trials. Kidney diets have also been demonstrated to sustain body weight and body condition scores for up to two years when food consumption is adequate. As long as cats with CKD Stages 2, 3, and 4 are closely monitored for proper calorie intake, the current IRIS clinical guidelines recommend providing renal diets to them.
