The Selected Works of Den& Xiaopin& (Volume I) contains forty-three important articles and speeches by Deng Xiaoping from 1938 to 1965, which reflect his important contributions to military affairs, politics, economics, and Party building during the historical periods of the War of Resistance Against Japan, the War of Liberation, and seventeen years following the founding of the People's Republic of China. 

Under extremely arduous conditions during the period of the War of Resistance Against Japan (1937-1945), Deng Xiaoping shouldered the responsibility for leading the base areas of resistance against Japan behind the enemy lines in north China In the nine works of this period included in this volume, he writes about the principles of the leadership and working methods of the Party, the economic development m the anti-Japanese base areas, and the organi-~tion work and the policies and strategies in the enemy-occupied areas, etc.

During the period of the War of Liberation (1945-1949), Deng Xiaoping, together with Liu Bocheng, Chen Yi, Su Yu, and others, led the Peoples Liberation Army against the KMT troops in many key battles. In the seven works of this period contained in this volume, he explains the strategic principles and deployment for the advance to the Central Plains, the establishment of base areas in the Dabie Mountains, and the fight for Beijing, Shanghai, and Hangzhou.

In this period, he also made policies and strategies concerning land reform and Party consolidation in the newly liberated areas in the Central Plains. The Central Committee of the Communist Party believed that these policies could be universally applied to all newly liberated areas and played a part in the formation of policies in the early period after the founding of new China, During the 17 years (1949-1965) after the founding of new China, Deng Xiaoping held leading posts in the Party, government and army in southwest China in the first three years. Seven works from the three years have been included in this volume, concerning the work strategy, journalism, united front, city work, and land reform in the newly liberated areas.

After he was transferred to the Central Government and participated in the leading work of the Party and Government, he emphasized the building of the party in power, expounded on the policies and principles of the nation's financial work, and stressed that the main task for the future is continuing the country's construction, as well as the guiding ideology for this task.

Twenty works of this period have been collected in this volume. The views and theories of Deng Xiaoping are a component part of Mao Zedong Thought. The publication of the Selected Works of Den& Xiaoping (Volume I) will be of great significance to the study of the history of the Communist Party of China and will help readers understand the policy of reform and Opening to the outside world in contemporary China.
