Neon isn't native to Los Angeles, but it's difficult to picture the city without it. Every aspect of our lives has been spelled out in neon tubes across the United States, but Los Angeles is the king of that advertising glow. No other landscape could match its sheer quantity of signs in this city that grew up with the automobile. This latest exhibit from Photo Friends and the Los Angeles Public Library Photo Collection celebrates the city's long and bright history with this unique type of illumination. About the Author
J. Eric Lynxwiler is an L.A. native and long-time docent for the Los Angeles Conservancy and Art Deco Society of Los Angeles. As a board member for the Museum of Neon Art, he continues to celebrate L.A.'s neon heritage by saving historic neon signs and guides the museum's famed "Neon Cruise" - now in his eighteenth year. Lynxwiler researched the book Wilshire Boulevard: Grand Concourse of Los Angeles and coauthored Knott's Preserved: From Berry Stand to Theme Park, The History of Knott's Berry Farm. He celebrates the little-known stories of Los Angeles and has just released his third book, Spectacular Illumination: Neon Los Angeles, 1925-1965 with photographer Tom Zimmerman.
