Sumerian Cuneiform is the oldest written language in the world. This glossary is intended for people who would like to learn the vocabulary of these Ancient people. There is still much to learn about Sumerian society but through the sheer volume of clay tablets which have been recovered, we can look beyond their business and administrative records and learn more about their values, religion and ethics. This index includes words that you would probably not find any of the rare dictionaries regarding the Sumerian language. I hope this glossary can inspire future generations to understand this exceptional civilization and it's impact on humanity.

The Akkadians, from the north, began to use Cuneiform in their own language and eventually conquered the Sumerians. Their assimilation of their advanced civilization into their own allowed them to establish the world's first empire. It is the language of Akkadian that survived the next two thousand years and it's inclusion in this glossary can illustrate the overwhelming influence of the Sumerian language and society into the modern era.
