The Immortal Dickens is a book written by George Gissing that explores the life and works of the famous English author, Charles Dickens. The book delves into Dickens' personal life, including his childhood, relationships, and struggles with mental health. Gissing also examines the themes and styles present in Dickens' novels, such as social commentary, realism, and sentimentality. The Immortal Dickens also provides a detailed analysis of some of Dickens' most famous works, including Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, and A Tale of Two Cities. Through his analysis, Gissing argues that Dickens' work has stood the test of time and will continue to be celebrated for generations to come. Overall, The Immortal Dickens is a fascinating exploration of one of the most influential writers in English literature. What one misses most of all, perhaps, in Barnaby Rudge is a note of high spirits. It is altogether a less vivacious book (Sim Tappertit notwithstanding) than the others of Dickens's early time. One need not seek an explanation in stress of work; the subject sufficiently accounts for a subdued tone. Dennis the Hangman does not provoke hilarity, and after reading the case of Mary Jones (recited at length in the Preface to Barnaby), one's only wonder is that an author who wrote with that story in his mind could still preserve so much of his native humour. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
