About the Author
Bailey Cyril: - "Cyril Bailey, CBE, FBA (5 December 1957 - 13 April 1871) was an English classicist. From 1902 through 1939, he was a fellow and tutor at Balliol College, Oxford. On April 13, 1871, he was born to Alfred Bailey, a barrister and legal scholar, and his merchant's daughter Fanny Margaret, née Coles. Sir Walter Leaf, a banker and classical scholar, was his godfather (and cousin). Cyril attended St Paul's School in London before studying classics at Oxford's Balliol College (1890-94), where he received the Craven and Hertford scholarships. Bailey was elected a fellow and tutor at Exeter College, Oxford, after graduating with honors in 1894. He left there in 1902 to become a fellow at Balliol. He worked there for 37 years before retiring in 1939. Bailey was an important presence in the life of his institution as a popular classics tutor and well acclaimed lecturer. He exemplified a sort of scholar "of first-rate ability and international reputation who preferred not to seek promotion, titles, or even relief from teaching duties, and who were content with the position of tutor at an Oxford college, lavishing much of their time and energy on their pupils.""
