About the Author
Childers Erskine: - "Robert Erskine Childers DSC (25 June 1870 - 24 November 1922), better known as Erskine Childers, was an Irish nationalist who was born in England and became famous as a writer with books about the Second Boer War, The Riddle of the Sands, which is about the Germans getting ready for a seaborne invasion of England, and plans for Irish independence. He fought in the Irish Civil War and was put to death by the Irish Free State government. Childers was a strong supporter of the British Empire and volunteered to fight in the Second Boer War in South Africa as part of the army expeditionary force. However, his experiences there made him slowly lose faith in British empire. He was chosen to run for British parliament as a Liberal Party candidate at a time when that party backed a treaty to give Ireland home rule. However, he later changed his mind and started supporting Irish republicanism and breaking all ties with Britain. He brought guns into Ireland illegally for the Irish Volunteers, which they later used against British forces in the Easter Rebellion. He played a big part in the talks between Ireland and Britain that led to the Anglo-Irish Treaty, but he was chosen to the first Irish parliament as a member who was against the Treaty."
