The period of time in between the 1st and 3rd centuries CE marks a very crucial and significant epoch in the history of Ancient India. This was the reformative period after the disintegration of the Shung dynasty, which managed to keep a vast portion of North India under one rule for about a century after the decline of the vast Mauryan Empire in about 187 BCE, which had already lost considerable parts of its territories due to the incompetent successors of the great Emperor Ashok (c. 304-232 BCE). The first three centuries of the Common Era are still shrouded with a number of historical problems and dark patches. India lost the national status and was in turmoil during the beginning as well as end of this period. Since the writing down of the contemporary events was not practiced in Early India, a large portion of the exact scenario of the time still resides in darkness. This book narrates the probable scene that must have been existed during the time on the basis of available evidences.
