Lara, a 57-year-old artist in Southern California, is stunned by the sudden death of her husband.

Launched unwillingly on that most difficult of journeys -- the first year of widowhood -- Lara faces loneliness, anxiety, and the inevitability of change. Caring for aging parents, and watching a beloved daughter move out into the world, Lara needs a companion in her own struggle and finds one in a most unlikely place. Henri is a stuffed bear, a gift from Lara's daughter. He has a heart of gold, a gourmet taste for honey, and a wisdom that belies his size. He is a listener, a comforter, and a reminder to Lara to appreciate her own life every day. This is the story of that year's journey and Lara's discoveries about resilience and the enduring power of love.

About The Author:
Tana Sommer-Belin is a native Californian who has spent much of her adult life in Europe, primarily in France, where she met her husband. After his death in 2003, Tana began to write the story held in this book. Though fictionalized, it remains a potent and deeply true account of one woman's first year of loss. A lifelong artist working mainly in oil and watercolor, Tana has practiced etching, photography, drawing, and ceramics. She is also a published poet. Her current artistic production and biography may be seen on her website tanasommer (.com). Tana Sommer-Belin now divides her year between California and the Perche region of France. She may occasionally be glimpsed in the company of a well-worn stuffed bear.
