About the Author
an Stevenson's education was broad, classical and largely scientific; as such, his own self-imposed struggle in writing is to achieve portraiture and feeling, as opposed to dry description. During his writing Stevenson deliberately holds dear the adage that "Every picture tells a story", and thus his goal is to paint those storytelling pictures in his reader's mind and to stir his characters' feelings in his reader's heart with his words. His beliefs about language development and the potential of early stage learning and its long-term beneficial effects on the ultimate self-direction and self-confidence of any child are based on his own outlooks and experience. Here's the ultimate take-away that motivates Stevenson's efforts to develop fun, exceptional stories that will encourage parents to foster their child's development of vocabulary, and thinking: Stevenson believes that our children's potential is often much greater than we may conceive, even with very progressive outlooks. He believes we should actively question our own parental assumptions regarding what a child may be absorbing or relating, and that we should be erring on the side that our assumptions may be self-limiting, and that the mental skills of a child are forged much earlier in development than we have historically presumed. Stevenson's own experience bears out this suggested questioning of the extent to which we "dumb down" our language and the sophistication of the explanations we relate to our children, and motivates his efforts. We at Vocabulary Moose believe that an expanded vocabulary is inextricably linked to mental development and expanded thinking and that it is never too early to start exposure to language and the mental constructs such expanded language can support. We also believe that a superior vocabulary may be successfully developed via contextually rich storytelling with your child. We hope that reading Stevenson's stories together with your child will be both a happy, bonding experience and a positive, vocabulary-expanding experience that will forge a foundation for your child's self-directed thinking and self-confidence. Ian Stevenson is a dual citizen of the U.S. and U.K. He hunts for words with the Vocabulary Moose, and when he finds a new one he always tries to make lifelong friends with it!
