Joan Sampson Tucker was born in England, of Anglo-Welsh parentage. The experience of having lived half her life in the UK and the other half in Tasmania has afforded her an insight which is both subjective and objective regarding both hemispheres, a privilege she has felt compelled to exploit in this anthology. "Her approach to the two worlds of her poetry is perceptive, sympathetic and motivated by an affection and knowledge which never lapses into sentimentality" (Bruce Dawe) The collection covers a very wide spectrum of themes, from the profoundly serious to the light and incongruous, so these poems have been grouped under eight title-page headings, reflecting all the influential aspects of life from which her inspiration has sprung.

About the Author
Of Anglo/Welsh parentage, Joan Sampson Tucker arrived in Australia with her husband and four young children in 1971. Originally a book illustrator, along with her teaching and studies of Spoken English she discovers in the discipline of Poetry, something very special: call it "elbow room" for expression, namely, the time element, which allows movement from ancient times through to the future; in a mere few words if necessary. She refuses to follow esoteric fashion and artificial techniques, looks for structure and skillful use of rhyme and rhythm where appropriate; the latter can occur in free verse although subtly. Poetry should always sound good as well as carry accessible meaning, preferably at more than one level. Our rich language deserves celebration. Her work has won a considerable number of prizes and placements in journals and poetry anthologies in Australia and in the U.K. She has also given poetry readings by invitation. On three occasions she has been selected as judge for T.F.A.W. branch competitions as well as for the Lovestone Foundation Annual Competition in 1987.
