William Longsword, Son of Rollon, founder of Normandy

This writing is the result of a master's thesis of Modern Letters, humanities option, made at the University of Rennes 2, supported in 2012, by myself.

If it borrows from history, through a number of historical archives, this research work borrows more from the legend and literary sources that allowed to release the second duke of Normandy, Viking and son of the viking Rollon, founder of Normandy in 911, of anonymity. Indeed, this academic work is the first that deals with an insufficiently known character, sometimes confused with a homonym, but of fundamental importance.

The choice of the title, Estoire de Guillaume Longue-Epée, is explained by the following considerations: it is a question of talking about history, but signifying by this choice, that it will be a question of entering into this history, of leaving it as much as possible its medieval meaning, and therefore not only be the current observer of a timeless sequence. It will be, moreover, not history but the story told.

In 7 chapters will be restored all the dimensions inherent in this type of publications, in particular the sources, the gaps between history and texts, the part of legend of the character, the dimension of the man, the mysteries to raise...
