The Smallwood Store in Chokoloskee was an informal community center for pioneers almost 100 years ago who shopped and got their mail there. It also did a thriving trade with the native Seminoles who trusted founder Ted Smaalwood.
The building and its artifacts have been preserved for our enjoyment and education. Visiting the Museum is like stepping back in time - it contains nostalgic items like original Coke bottles, medicinal remedies, and old-fashioned household goods, plus records going back to the early days.
The author has encapsulated the history of the area and the story of this unique family.
