About the Author

extended SGG bio:

Joe Miller grew up in Colorado but didn't become addicted to outdoor adventure until moving to North Carolina in 1992. For seventeen years, he wrote about his passion for adventure for the News & Observer of Raleigh, featuring endeavors that ranged from winter backpacking in the high country to a Fourth of July bike race on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. Today, Joe is an outdoors and fitness writer based in Cary, N.C., where he produces the outdoor recreation blog GetGoingNC.com. He is also the author of Backpacking North Carolina and 100 Classic Hikes in North Carolina. In addition to being a hiker and a backpacker, Joe is an avid cyclist, participating in cross-country and endurance mountain bike races; a skier-turned-snowboarder; a paddler (flat water, mostly); a certified scuba diver; and the owner of a longboard skateboard, which he rides with the utmost respect. In 2009, he rekindled a long-dormant love of running, trading the faster 10Ks of his youth for half marathons and trail running.
