About the Author
As the executive director and founder of Kidpower Teenpower Fullpower International, author Irene van der Zande has empowered thousands of parents and other caring adults around the world to take charge of the emotional and physical safety of their kids and other loved ones. As a child who was bullied long ago, Irene promised herself that she would never forget what it was like to feel so alone, sad, and scared. She believes passionately that kids have the right to be safe and the responsibility to respect the safety of others. She is committed to giving adults the tools they need to create cultures of caring, respect, and safety for everyone, everywhere. Irene established Kidpower as a nonprofit organization in 1989 in partnership with educators, parents, mental health experts, child safety specialists, law enforcement officials, and other caring adults. She has led the organization ever since. Instead of using fear to teach children about violence prevention, Kidpower makes it fun to learn to be safe. This is important because kids learn better when they're having fun. The Kidpower Positive Practice Method empowers kids with habits that build their awareness, confidence, and personal power, making them less likely to become victims of bullying, abduction, abuse and other types of physical or emotional violence. Operating in over 20 countries, Kidpower has reached over 2 million people of all ages through in-person workshops and events, publications tailored for different needs, on-line educational resources, videos, and long distance seminars and one-on-one coaching.
