About the Author
Bob Wilhelm, Master Ocean, has over fifty years at sea. Beginning as a submariner in the U.S. Navy, he has gone on to commercial fishing, running charters, and sailing all as Master of his own vessel. He breaks down the method behind ocean navigation; it is the scientific process of directing the movement of a vessel from one point on the earth's surface to another as described by latitude and longitude. Modern scientific navigators need the tools required to lay a course and compute distance, a compass to steer by, and a means of determining vessel's position during passage. This compendium of technical knowledge has been constructed and presented in order that a navigator process the tools to develop a voyage plan using dead reckoning, piloting techniques for position fixes, celestial equations for ocean passage, and tidal formula for a safe uneventful voyage. The primary result produced by this compendium is providing up-to-date, scientific navigation procedures applicable for small vessels. Some of these mathematical equations may seem complicated to the casual observer, however be assured that they are very convenient, and much quicker than graphic solutions and with more accuracy.
