England Before the Conquest: Studies in Primary Sources Presented to Dorothy Whitelock

Concerned with the basic materials of documents, literature, art, place-names, inscriptions, coins, buildings and archaeological finds, the twenty-two original studies that make up this 1971 text brought fresh understanding to various important topics in Anglo-Saxon scholarship. Native, continental, Scandinavian and Irish elements in five centuries of Anglo-Saxon history are represented. Each contribution exemplifies the methods and expertise of a modern specialisation, but collectively the essays show the value of a joint approach.
