GOD.ORG: WHY RELIGION REALLY MATTERS. Much of the Western First World is headed toward a thoroughly secularized form of culture, where any recourse to value systems and guidance from religion is almost completely taboo. This is a very bold experiment. It is fair to ask: Can we in the Western First World survive, if we become thoroughly cut off from our roots? GOD.ORG is a scholarly, yet very readable, examination of these issues--both from an historical perspective and from the perspective of the here and now. CHAPTERS: 1. In the Beginning was the Word and the Word was Information; 2) Looking for God; 3) The Gods of Fields, Rocks, Fields, and Streams; 4) The Gods of Sex and Violence vs. the God of Love and Peace; 5) Brotherly Love, Revolt, Revolution, and Revelation; 6) Humanism, Human Rights, and Indigenous People's Rights; 7) European Enlightenment, Deism, and the Monkey on Darwin's Back; 8) The Religions of Darwinism, Materialism, and the Death of God; 9) Science, Secular Humanism, and Environmentalism; 10) Reformations, Congregationalisms, Church, Mosque, and State; 11) Fundamental vs. Fundamentalism; 12) Why the World needs Rome (and Assisi); 13) What is Marriage for and Why are Church and State Involved? 14) Christianity, Islam, and the Next Generation; Epilogue: A Personal Reflection Life, Death, Afterlife.

About the Author
JOHN NASSIVERA (PhD) is an award winning author who has taught at McGill and Columbia Universities. He is also a volunteer who visits with inmates in one of New York's maximum security prisons. Insights from both his academic life and his work in prisons have gone into this book. A "former card carrying Secular Humanist" himself, his book GOD.ORG is about why that position has severe limitations and is not likely to be the most responsible mind set for those involved in educating the next generation, in assisting the disadvantaged, or in attempting to foster peace in the world.
