At the biannual Highland Games in the small Texas town of Daunder, bagpipe player Nigel Pauley is ruthlessly stabbed with a sgian dubh, a knife pipers wear as part of their costume. Carl Geiger, a fellow piper and Nigel's sworn enemy, is the prime suspect. After all, he'd been seen arguing with Nigel just hours before he turned up dead.

Carl didn't do it, but convincing the voluptuous deputy sheriff in charge of the investigation is another matter, which is further complicated by the growing attraction between them. In order to prove his innocence, Carl is determined to find out who actually murdered Nigel, and why. But the deeper he digs, the more people he discovers who might have wanted Nigel dead. Nigel's last-minute act before he died may lead Carl to Nigel's murderer . . . or to his own death.

About the Author
Jennifer Lewis Williams is an appellate attorney for an intermediate Texas court and a creator of colorful characters for her crime fiction. After fourteen years working with the court, she has gleaned some of the reasons why individuals betray those closest to them, and what makes criminals to do what they do. She was born and raised in Topeka, Kansas, and credits her strong faith and firm work ethic to her upbringing in the Sunflower state. She started writing poetry and short stories during her formative grade-school years. She counts receiving a first-place award from her local library for reading the most books over the summer vacation, at age seven, as one of her proudest moments. Another gratifying occasion occurred when, at age twelve, her late father's employer published one of her poems in the company newsletter. She attributes her storytelling skills to her late father, whose vivid oral stories about ghosts, monsters, and unusual people kept her and her four siblings entertained on stormy or full-moon-lit nights. Williams always intended to write stories that would help people recognize themselves within the pages, like she herself has done throughout her life. She considers herself a late-bloomer, mainly because she did not attend college when she graduated from high school. She worked as a secretary for many years before embarking on a deferred goal, studying the craft of writing. When her daughter began her sophomore year at college, Williams enrolled as well. In 1994, she earned her B.A. degree in English, with a creative writing emphasis, from the University of Kansas, and in 1998, she received a J.D. degree from Washburn University School of Law. Although she embarked on a legal career, Williams continued writing, eventually branching out to novel-length projects. In April 2013, she created Williams Ink Publishing and published her debut novel, A Murder Among Friends. Her debut novel made the quarter-final round in the 2014 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Awards. Her second novel follows her love for mysteries and curious characters. Williams is a member of Mystery Writers of America, Southwest Division and Sisters in Crime. She loves reading mysteries, science fiction, and tales about the Old West. She lives in a Dallas suburb with four furry girls: a Pug, two Chihuahuas, and a Shar-Pei.
