Historical and Philosophical Foundations of Outdoor and Environmental Education

Dr. Thomas J. Rillo has taught at various levels of higher education for over forty-four years. Dr. Rillo's first assignment in higher education was as assistant professor of education and coordinator of the outdoor teacher education program at Montclair State College in New Jersey. During this time he was associated with the New Jersey State School of Conservation. At Southern Illinois University he was associate professor of outdoor education and coordinator of the Outdoor Education Center for Southern Illinois. He next taught at Glassboro State College in New Jersey where he was professor of Environmental Education. Dr. Rillo was professor of Outdoor Environmental Education at Indiana University for twenty years. Dr. Rillo was associated with The American Wilderness Leadership School near Jackson Hole, Wyoming for twenty-two summers.

Much of his background can be attributed to his long association with Dr. Lloyd B. Sharp, founder of the outdoor education movement in the United States. Dr. Rillo has been with many outdoor environmental education programs at their outset as a consultant and instrumental in the initiation of these programs. He is author of numerous publications relating to outdoor environmental education. He is recipient of many awards relating to outdoor education and environmental education.

He is highly qualified to author a book on the historical and philosophical foundations of outdoor environmental education. As a pioneer himself, he has lived with much of the history and the environmental education movement. This book is an excellent resource for college and university courses involving the foundations of outdoor environmental education.
