Harry Coulbeck is an angry young man, a maverick, a fighter and a dreamer struggling to come to terms with life in a decade of unprecedented change. This is Harry's saga, it is the story of his family and his close friends, it tells of their hopes and hardships, of their loves, their loyalties and their losses. It is a story played out on the trawlers, in the pubs, the cafes and the dancehalls of the world's greatest fishing port. It is 1964 and Britain stands on the threshold of a new technological era, but in the dockyards and on the distant water trawlers of Grimsby, life is still hard and the men and women who work there, harder still.

About the Author
Mike Mitchell was born in 1958 in Cleethorpes, he has worked in the seafood industry since 1981. Mike is renowned both nationally and internationally in the field of seafood sustainability and has written on this subject in trade journals and in the academic press. Whilst foraging in a store cupboard in the offices where he works on Grimsby docks, Mike discovered a trove of old photographs and other materials from the company's history, dating back as far as the 1940's. Amongst this find was an album of black and white photographs taken during the early 1960's, they were simple but compelling images of people going about their everyday work in the factories of the day. This set Mike's mind working; who were these people and what were their stories? Hope Street is the imagined story inspired by them, and although the people and events portrayed in this book are fictional, such stories of love and loss have been played out many thousands of times in the real lives of the people who lived and worked in Grimsby during the fishing years.
