About the Author
Sky Burke is a twelve-year-old girl who lives in Long Island, New York. Sky lives with her mom, stepfather, three sisters, and one brother. She has two dogs and four cats. Sky will be starting 7th grade this school year. She plays the flute and loves to sing. Sky is a public speaker who speaks across New York about the importance of self-advocacy and how it helps her. She also speaks about disability awareness. Sky is a new author. "I Am Just Me" is her first book. Sky is learning to overcome her learning disability of Dyslexia and Dysgraphia. She uses her iPad at home and at school to help with all her educational needs. In September 2013, Sky became the Youth Ambassador of the Self Advocacy Youth Group (SANYS). Sky gave a keynote speech in front of 450 people at the SANYS conference in September 2013 and taught a workshop called Tech Savvy. In April 2013, she received a national award called the Fred J. Epstein Junior Achievement Award in recognition for discovering, at the age of 8, the power of advocating for herself and helping others to achieve their potential as well. In June 2013, Sky was student of the year and received a Presidential Academic Award. Sky is hoping this book will aspire children and adults to be their own self advocate. She works mostly in acrylics, as well as collage and mixed media and has worked illustrating children's books since 2007.
