About the Author
Swami Dharrmananda was born in Kolkata in 1953. Though raised in the Hindu faith, his early years were grounded in Christian Theology; he was educated in a Christian convent. In deference to his father's wishes, Swamiji was admitted to the prestigious National Defense Academy at age eleven, where he studied the sciences, and became familiar with western psychology and philosophy. He was awarded the Madras Gold medal for sports and graduated from Indian Military Academy as a commissioned officer in 1976. Though educated in the art of war, a strong inner calling eventually forced Swamiji to relinquish a promising military career. He became enamored with the practice of yoga and took refuge at the feet of his Guru, Shri Vishwaguruji Maharaj in Rishikesh. He began teaching Yoga and Hindu philosophy in 1985. After many years of practice and study, he was employed as the manager of the Ved Niketan Dham Ashram; he became Ashram Director in 1988. Under the guidance and tutelage of H.H. Shri Vishwaguruji Maharaj, he created a thoroughly original training program, an integrated syllabus for the nourishment of the body, mind and soul-combining the sacred essence of Eastern philosophy with the Western sciences in an attempt to elevate the human spirit.
