Two years after he and Edmund Hillary stood on the summit of Everest, Tenzing Norgay told the story of his life, from a Sherpa boyhood to the world's highest point.

Man of Everest is Tenzing's own account, told to the American writer James Ramsey Ullman. It follows him from his early years in the high villages of the Himalaya, through seasons of carrying loads for British, Swiss and other parties, to when he and Hillary became the first people known to have reached the top of the mountain.

Tenzing had been on Everest again and again before that day, on attempts stretching back to the 1930s, and he speaks plainly about the labour, the risk and what the work cost. Ullman shaped the narrative, but the judgements and the memories are Tenzing's, and the result is one of very few first-hand accounts of the 1953 ascent written from the Sherpa side.
