If you ever wanted to know how a World Record Middle-Distance runner trained from 1963-1971 and his thoughts about racing and life in America this is the book for you. He presents his ideas as a dialogue to the reader in everyday language with a touch of humor. You will get a look at aspects of growing up on the South Side of Chicago in the 1950's in an ethnic Slavic working class neighborhood and becoming a world class athlete who graduated from world class universities, Northwestern and The University of Chicago. He provides his exact workouts that led to a spectacular racing season in 1969 that ended with a 1000 yard run world record tie with Peter Snell, the Olympian from New Zealand. The training is for the 18-30 year old runner who is still competing and training independently who still aspires to greatness and improvement and is looking for a system that works. He offers to coach you using cyber technology worldwide. You will have an e-mail discussion board to communicate with athletes worldwide. The book is illustrated with 100 photographs of running and Chicago landmarks, many in color.

The author relates his experiences in Russia during 1968 on a college cultural trip, how he trained preparing for the US Olympic tryout, interesting people he met, and Moscow and the Soviet Union.

He comments about black and white athletes he knew, and has a dedication to Ted Haydon, the respected icon of track and originator of the University of Chicago Track Club. He tells the story of competing on the National Champion UCTC 2-mile relay team.

The author is an economics professor. He digresses to offer some observations about the US Economy and Russian foreign policy today. These are further analyzed in depth in an upcoming book.

About the Author
Schultz, Ralph: - I was born and lived on Chicago's South Side from 1947-1957 in a working class Slavic neighborhood and then in Evergreen Park where I graduated from High School in 1965, a Chicago southwest suburb. I went to Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois where I graduated in 1969 with a honors major in history. In 1969 I tied a world record in the 1000 yard run at the Big 10 Conference Track Meet. In 1972 I received a Master of Business degree in finance and economics from the University of Chicago. I worked for 35 years in the investment business as a corporate bond specialist and in equipment leasing and structured finance for international banks in Chicago including as a vice-president for Deutsche Bank, the leading bank in Germany. In 2003 I switched to teaching and worked at tribal colleges from 2005-2009 at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota and the Navajo Reservation in Arizona. For the past nine since 2009 I have been an adjunct economics instructor at Central New Mexico Community College. In 1968 I went to Moscow Russia, the Soviet Union, to study Russian language and culture with a USA college group. I was a strategic intelligence analyst in the United States Army. This book is meant to share my ideas about middle-distance track and field performance training and international political and economic issues to provoke analysis and perhaps challenge your viewpoints. I wrote this book because I wanted to express my ideas about running in a system that worked so well for me my senior year at Northwestern University. It's all in here with my commentary, ideas, and I talk to you in a straightforward and folksy way. It's based on what worked for me when I tied a world record of 2:06 in the 1,000-yard run, that was held by Peter Snell of New Zealand. I did very well in many races at the 880 and ran a 4:06 mile my senior year at Northwestern. I think there is a lot to be learned here, and it's probably somewhat contrary to today's training. It's not meant to replace training for the star-studded national caliber athletes, nor to take the place or be competitive with today's coaching methods at collegiate or track club level. It's meant to be a book for the runner who needs some help, who is either isolated or is not part of a major program. I think it works. You can become a highly ranked athlete. And I hope you enjoy reading this and my story and my anecdotes about society. Take care of yourself and good luck I also have written a substantial portion about ideas that matter to me and I want to express to many people. I have a lifelong wealth of wisdom and teach economics at a community college. I also traveled to Russia/Soviet Union in 1968. It made a major impression on me. I think athletes can and should speak out on issues that they think are important.
