About the Author
Robert S. Mellis began his journalistic career in Scotland in the 1950s. He was the youngest editor of a weekly newspaper in the United Kingdom at the age of 18. He emigrated to the U.S. at age 20 and worked at newspapers as diverse as The Portsmouth (N.H.) Herald, The St. Petersburg Times, The Miami Herald, The (Allentown) Morning Call and The Warren (Ohio) Tribune. He found his niche in journalism when he became publisher of a group of weekly newspapers in Connecticut and New York. This is where he honed his skills as an inventive leader while struggling on a weekly basis to increase revenues. After four years as publisher of The Housatonic Valley Publishing Co., the newspapers were recognized for their journalistic excellence. The lead newspaper, The New Milford Times, was named the best weekly in New England. During his 10 years with the company, he fine-tuned his belief that financial resources do not determine quality. Instead, inventive brainpower lies at the root of creative and, ultimately, financial success. These years honed and prepared him for traveling the world where he taught journalists, who generally perform their work with minimal resources, how to achieve journalistic excellence.
