Puff the Sea lion: A Love Story

"On my break I would start the game with one of my children's toy cars and Puff would chase it. When my break was over I would pass the car to a volunteer, docent, or any visitor that wanted to play with the sea lion pup. What an experience for Puff and the visitors, not to mention myself Our bond grew stronger. I believe because of this time with people-all positive and fun and he could leave to play elsewhere if he chose-Puff really liked people. He associated all those good times and good feelings with his people friends. When people visited his enclosure he was so excited and very gentle. Once I brought a little girl to visit Puff. She was in a wheelchair. He approached her chair and let her pet him. Right then and there I knew Puff was someone special. His trust changed me-I became a better person." This is the memoir of a zookeeper and how the love of one animal brought her closer to God.

Mary Ellen Ostrander has been working with animals at the same zoo since 1985. She has been married for twenty-five years and has two wonderful sons, three dogs, a cat, and three birds. She is a member of the American Association of Zoo Keepers (AAZK), International Marine Animal Trainer's Association (IMATA), and Animal Behavior Management Alliance (ABMA) .
