Jamie McCarthy is a reclusive seventeen-year-old learning how to survive in a rough, lower-class suburb in 1960's Scotland.

Like a lot of teenagers, seventeen-year-old Jamie is struggling to navigate his way through the uncharted waters of growing up: the world of first dates, sexual exploration, friendships, and family dramas.

When he 'finds' some money on the floor of the corner store, he thinks his luck is in. But sometimes what seems like fortune's kindly smile is only a mask hiding something quite ugly.

So it is with Jamie. The seemingly innocent decision to keep the money triggers a series of events that traps him in a quagmire of deception and criminality and threatens the safety of those dearest to him.

Read Small Fish Big Fish and you'll agree this is one of the best psychological thriller books for teens to portray life as it truly was in nineteen sixties Scotland: a time and place where hope, loyalty, and courage are tested to the limit.

If you enjoy realistic fiction filled with compelling characters, mystery, and a touch of young romance, then you'll love PJ McDermott's psychological thriller books with a twist.

'A wonderful story that all young people can relate to. It takes an age-old battle and puts it splendidly into words that many will appreciate. I could not believe the climax.'

In his teens and early twenties, PJ sang and played in a number of bands on the local folk circuit and pub scene. By twenty-one, a girlfriend convinced him to go to Glasgow University where he had a ball, and graduated Bachelor of Science. When he graduated, he met and fell in love with an Aussie girl who convinced him to return to Melbourne with her. Married to Susan, they now have two children (Fiona and Gillian) and two grandchildren (Mia, who is especially cheeky) and Ryder Patrick (who is too young to be cheeky yet - but is very cute). PJ discovered a love for writing and published his first book in 2014 - a coming of age novel titled Small Fish Big Fish, since fully re-visioned, revised and reissued. PJ is currently working on the third book in his science fiction series, the Prosperine Trilogy. The first two, Avanaux: A Hickory Lace scifi-fantasy adventure, and Rise of the Erlachi are available in paperback and eBook."
