Tales of the Silk Road describes one of the author's several journeys between Europe and the Orient. The trip sought routes taken by Marco Polo, Alexander the Great, and Papal emissaries. Beginning in Venice, as did Polo, the path led mostly overland through Anatolia and Central Asia and China before proceeding to Islamabad via the Karakoram Highway and the Khunjerab Pass. Tales of the Silk Road mixes travel descriptions of exotic lands with careful social assessments and intense personal experiences. Historical context supports the tales.

About the Author
James Murphy filled three university teaching assignments in China and three in Japan. These were all accompanied by extensive overland travel. The first trip to China began with a circular railroad journey about Europe and on to Helsinki. Rails then led to Moscow where the Trans Siberian ran through Manchuria to Beijing and to his university. Leaving China he traveled onward to Nepal, India, Thailand, the Philippines and Japan moving always overland when possible. After this introduction to the East, other trips followed, usually through Europe, Central Asia and across China by the Genghis Khan Express. Finally Middle Eastern journeys overland in Jordan, Syria, Iran and Israel connected Silk and Spice roads there with Central and East Asian trade routes. A new adventure, now being pieced together, will go round the world by freighter and will imitate Marco Polo's ship journey from China back to Europe.
