Russian influence in Central Asia is waning. Since attaining independence, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan have forged their own paths-building relationships with outside powers and throwing off the last vestiges of Soviet domination.
