About the Author
Jim Byron, the author, was born during the great depression with a Spina Bifida. This devastating disability which is located near the tail bone which caused my right leg to be 2 1/2" shorter than the left leg, my feet were inverted toward the center of my body. I had club feet, hammer toes, both were corrected with surgery, was incontinent and my growth was stunted. After I had surgery at 6 months to correct the Spina Bifida, the Doctors didn't expect me to live to see my first birthday. When I was 7 1/2 years old a neighbor said, "Jimmy, if you can walk on your hands I'll buy an ice cream cone." I stood on my hand and walked six or seven steps. They didn't expect me to get an ice cream cone by walking on my hands during the great depression that was like a million dollars to a child. This felt so good that I extended the distance. Our high school gym had three basketball courts and I was able to walk from one corner to the other on my hands. Years later I became a masseur and this strength gave me the endurance to massage an average of 30 athletes, in the evening five nights a week. They didn't know I would be able to compete in sports which I did. I have had a working career spanning 50 years, and also a family, two children, and been married for over 50 years. I was raised by a loving family in a spiritual atmosphere. Thanks to God I have lived a life the Doctors didn't think possible.
